Sarangi, Then and Now: A New Chapter Begins
Sarangi began in 2009 with a deep appreciation for Kanjivaram silk, Indian craftsmanship and objects made with skill and character.
Over the years, it became known for its carefully selected saris, its interest in traditional design and its conversations around colour, motifs, weaving and craft. The Sarangi Journal grew alongside the store, recording stories about artisans, textiles, art, festivals, architecture and the many forms of creativity found across India.
Much has changed since then.
The physical sari store has closed, but the ideas that shaped Sarangi remain. We continue to be drawn to objects that are distinctive because of their design, material, craftsmanship, cultural context or story.
Today, Sarangi is beginning a new chapter.
A wider world of objects
The new Sarangi will not be limited to one product category.
Silver jewellery will be an important part of the store, with earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings and other forms of adornment selected for their design, quality and wearability.
Over time, Sarangi will also introduce art, printed paper products, gifts and other objects that we find worth sharing.
Some may be rooted in Indian traditions. Others may be contemporary. Some may be made by hand, while others may stand apart because of an unusual idea, process or material.
What connects them is not a single style.
It is the sense that each object should have something special about it.
What remains unchanged
Sarangi’s earlier journey was closely connected with Kanjivaram silk. That history will remain part of the brand.
The old articles in the Sarangi Journal will continue to record those years. Many of them explore subjects that remain relevant, including motifs, craftsmanship, colour, Indian design traditions and the lives of makers.
We will gradually revisit and update selected articles where necessary. We will also add new writing about jewellery, art, design, paper, materials and the stories behind the objects offered through the store.
The Journal will therefore remain broader than a product catalogue.
It will continue to be a place for observation, learning and discovery.
Silver jewellery, first
Our immediate focus is silver jewellery.
The collection will include pieces for everyday wear as well as designs with a more distinctive presence. You will find different forms, finishes, stones and influences, accompanied by clear information about materials, dimensions and care.
We believe that jewellery should be presented honestly.
Online photographs can sometimes make a piece appear larger or smaller than it really is. Materials and finishes also need proper explanation. Through the product pages and the Journal, we will try to provide the information needed to choose with confidence.
Upcoming articles will explain subjects such as:
- 925 sterling silver
- Rhodium plating
- Cubic zirconia
- Freshwater pearls
- Jewellery dimensions
- Care and storage
- Selecting earrings for comfort and everyday use
A store that can continue to evolve
Sarangi’s new direction is intentionally broad.
We do not know every category that the store may explore in the years ahead. That openness is part of the idea.
The store may change as we encounter new artists, makers, materials and products. But the basis for selection will remain consistent.
We will look for objects that are thoughtfully designed, well made and interesting enough to deserve a place in your life.
This is Sarangi, then and now.
The form has changed. The curiosity remains.
