Handloom weaving has existed and even thrived in India for many millennia. However, it was Gandhiji’s adoption of Khadi which helped it become an emblem of India’s independence movement and handloom weaving a paradigm of self-reliance. What is required is for handloom and Khadi to be adopted into contemporary wear. It is in this area that institutions such as Gandhigram are innovating by adapting and changing to remain relevant to the present time.
