The Brihadeesvara Temple, a supreme example of Chola architecture

The Brihadisvara temple at Tanjavur marks the greatest achievement of the Chola architects. Known in the inscriptions as Dakshina Meru, the construction of this temple was inaugurated by the Chola King, Rajaraja I (985-1012 CE) possibly in the 19th regal year (1003-1004 CE) and consecrated by his own hands in the 25th regal year (1009-1010 CE).

Because this temple is an architectural marvel, an aesthetic delight. Because it is the product of the collaborative, creative genius of architects, engineers, designers, builders and sculptors of more than a thousand years ago. Because it is indicative of amazing technical skills and artistic prowess. Because it has withstood many earthquakes and at least one major fire. Because, even to this day, we are unable to fathom how it was done. Because it's breathtakingly beautiful. The Brihadeeshwara Temple, Thanjavur.
